Though the musicians are classically trained in Western and Eastern theory, there is no illusion of duplicating original sounds of Persian classical music nor the sounds of native performers. Far from that goal, Monika aims to push the sounds, vibes, beats, and words of Persian songs at least one step closer into the world of Western ears and hearts. This is not a group dressing in traditional or "native" costumes.
This American ensemble strives to make the beautiful music of Iran accessible and appealing to the new generation of young Iranians and very importantly to a wide audience of non-Iranians. Monika Jalili's effort is aimed at bringing Persian music to a broader audience. Her music is founded on the lyrics and poetry of Iranian poets. The novel arrangements re-interpret and re-present well-known songs for generations of Iranians who first heard those songs long ago.
